Night Owl Reviews | Five Hearts by Dana Littlejohn

Five Hearts Anthology - Dana LittlejohnTerri of Night Owl Reviews

Title: Five Hearts
Authors: Dana Littlejohn, Sandy Sullivan, Sable Hunter, Cynthia Arsuaga, Daisy Dunn
Score: 4.00 / 5
Active Date: Jan 1, 2013

Five authors bring five totally different stories about love, romance and Valentine’s Day.  While each was well written and packed a lot into a few short pages, not all were stories that I would have normally read.  I think this is one of the advantages of an anthology; checking out the authors before you put out a bunch of money and discover you dislike a writing style.  Anyway, from ghostly girlfriends to a chance meeting at a business party, each couple is unique and interesting.

This book starts out with A Hot and Spicy Valentine by Sable Hunter.  Neither main character is perfect in this story and both have lots of insecurities but they work.  This could almost be called a nice sweet romance and the story is fun.  This story is followed by Cynthia Arsuaga’s Lost In the Sea of You.  Here a ghost is looking for love on Valentine’s Day and finds it.  She disappears after a few days, only to return the next year.  I wasn’t thrilled with this story but it was definitely interesting.  Business parties are usually boring and full of business but in Cupid’s Target by Dana Littlejohn, they also have a hot guy and the opportunity for some smoking sex.  This is definitely not a boring story by any means!  Accidental Valentines by Daisy Dunn is bitter sweet.  It starts with a wife storming out of a marriage and a husband dying in a car accident.  Five years later the surviving spouses met.  Will the past affect the future?  Finishing this collection is Sandy Sullivan’s Forever Kind of Love.  He gave her up because he was convinced that he wasn’t good enough for her but he’s never forgotten her.  She still loves him even though he broke her heart.  With the help of some well-meaning friends, can they clear the air and get back together again?

Overall, I liked this anthology.  The stories were complete.  They had interesting characters and good story lines.  This is definitely a great book to buy and it will give you a lot of ways to look at Valentine’s Day.

Just a little taste…

After taking his sister’s car keys, Gerald followed the highway signs leading him to the heart of New Orleans. He parked in the same place they did when he came to see his brother-in-law and followed his memory to the old house. The old woman was sitting right where he left her two days ago.

“Welcome back, Gerald Dixon. I knew you would come.”

He stopped in front of her. “You did, huh? Well then, maybe you could tell me what the hell is going on. Nothing has been the same since I left this place.”

She nodded. “Yes, you would think that, but all is well.”

“Look, I’m not in the mood for games. Just tell me what is going on.”

“You have been chosen because strength and courage in a nonbeliever is needed to lift a curse that should have never been cast. Are you up for the challenges? Will you do what is necessary to free Margarita Malveaux’s spirit?” she asked him critically eyeing him as she leaned across her table.

“Yes, I want to help her be free.”

She nodded once and stood. “That is why you are here. Follow me.”

Just a little taste…

Jade walked by the dance floor, bobbing her head to the music. Just as she put her glass on a passing waiter’s tray, someone grabbed her hand and yanked her to the dance floor.

“Hey! What the—”

“Shh! Here, turn your back this way. You gotta dance with me. Can you step?”

“What? Excuse you, but—”

“Shh! Please, help me out. I’m trying to hide over here.”

“Hide?” She looked around quickly, letting him pull her around the dance floor. “Hide from what?”

“Not a what, a who. I don’t know who she is, but she’s been following me around since I got here.” He ducked behind her and twirled her around.

She moved stiffly in his arms and spoke crisply. “Look, I didn’t come to this party to do protection work.”

“Okay, then why did you come to this party?” He lowered himself again, his body folded almost in half in an attempt to hide himself behind Jade’s smaller frame. “Shit, don’t move. There she is,” he whispered urgently.

He retreated, pulling Jade with him, closer to the center of the dance floor. Somehow he managed to keep the beat with the fast paced music as he slipped by the dancers He kept his face down and her back turned to the woman, using her as a shield, but Jade’s curiosity was peaked. She peeked over her left shoulder, trying to spy who the man was hiding from.

Several people separated them from a beautiful, young black woman who appeared to be scanning the crowded dance floor. Her bottle blonde hair bobbed up and down, poking out between the shifting shoulders of the people as she shimmied among them in her search. He readjusted their position to keep Jade between him. Jade only caught glimpses of the tiny yellow curls and the red dress that her top heavy body was stuffed into as she pushed her way through the sea of dancers. The small woman was clearly having difficulty maneuvering through the dance floor. To her partner’s obvious relief, she finally gave up her search and he stood to his full height.

“What was the problem? She’s, umm…pretty.”

Asian Spice

Just a little taste…

She walked over to him and pulled him back to the sofa. “Michael, you worry too much. I am all about discretion. I don’t want to jeopardize my job or yours. I just want to have a little fun while I’m in China and take you along for the ride.” She sat him down next to her.  “Now, there’s no one in your life right now, right? I don’t want any drama with anyone thinking I’m stepping on their toes or stealing their man.”
He shook his head and chuckled. “ No, no one like that. I work too much to have any type of relationship.” He paused and chuckled again. “ In fact it’s been a long time since I’ve been with a woman.”
“Hmm, well it sounds to me like you’re due to have a stress free, no strings attached love affair. So tell me, Michael, are you up for one?” She moved closer as he pondered her question. “Come on, Michael, I could use a little Asian spice in my life.”
He laughed as she pushed him back and he let her crawl on top of him. “Asian spice, huh? So, if you’re getting Asian spice, what will I be getting?”
